The Castles & Lakes of Bavaria

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1 – Bernried

Scheduled flight to Germany from your preferred airport – transfer with our tour manager in our private executive coach to the 3* Hotel Seeblick in the village of Bernried, voted Bavaria’s most attractive village in 2006.

Day 2 – Herrsching am Ammersee & Nymphenburg Palace

Time at leisure in the town of Herrsching am Ammersee or choose to join our optional cruise on picturesque Lake Ammersee – the highlights of the Baroque Nymphenburg Palace, the summer residence of the Bavarian monarchs, include the ‘Gallery of Beauties’, commissioned by Ludwig I, the former bedroom of King Ludwig II and fine ceiling frescoes in the impressive banquet hall.

Day 3 – Wieskirche, Füssen & Neuschwanstein Castle

Wieskirche, an oval Rococo church designed in the late 1740s by Dominikus Zimmermann, was added to the UNESCO list in 1983 – time at leisure for lunch in the medieval town of Füssen, framed by imposing high mountain peaks – Neuschwanstein Castle was built by the shy King Ludwig II in order to withdraw from public life but seven weeks after his death in 1886 it was opened to the public and today is one of the most popular of all Europe’s castles.

Day 4 – Linderhof Castle & Oberammergau Passion Play Theatre

Built between 1874 and 1878 and the smallest of King Ludwig II’s three royal castles, Linderhof Palace was originally intended as a hunting lodge but later he declared it would be a new Versailles and the wonderful French Rococo interiors and beautiful parkland certainly reflect that ambition – guided tour of the Oberammergau Passion Play Theatre where in a production involving more than 2,000 villagers, the world famous Passion Play is performed, a tradition which first started in 1634.

Day 5 – Bernried

Morning free at leisure before we transfer to the airport for our scheduled flight home.

Reviews for The Castles & Lakes of Bavaria

Date of tour: May 2015

An alternative title for this extraordinary trip might have been ‘Buttercup Meadows and a Fairytale King’. Our drives through the rolling countryside of Bavaria took us past green meadows filled with buttercups against a backdrop of the snow-capped mountains in the distance. The Hotel Seeblick was traditional on the outside and comfortable and modern inside. It was set near the Starnberger See in a village full of wooden chalets – some decorated with murals, flower filled gardens and churches whose bells were our alarm clocks. A gentle stroll to the lake became a favourite occupation. The food was great with wonderful bread though the liver dumpling soup was an acquired taste. Paul – the best tour manager I’ve known introduced us to King Ludwig II, who built three of the castles and palaces we visited. Paul went to endless trouble to help where needed. A great trip. Can’t wait for another one!

As ever we are very pleased with all the arrangements you made for us and from my perspective as the organiser it is always a pleasure dealing with Tailored Travel.

Just a note to thank you and the TT team for a very successful Bavaria tour. Sue was an excellent and well informed guide. The hotels also met with everyone's approval. Now looking forward to Malta.
