Itinerary
Day 1
We fly from either London Heathrow or London Gatwick Airport for our direct scheduled flight to Berlin. On arrival in Berlin we are met by Peter Medhurst and our local professional guide who will accompany us on all transfers and included daily excursions. We then transfer by private executive coach to the 4* Park Inn Hotel in Berlin for a four night stay. Dinner in our hotel is included this evening and the remaining evenings are on bed and breakfast basis. Prior to this evening’s dinner we enjoy the first of Peter Medhurst’s three lectures on the tour.
Day 2
This morning we enjoy a guided tour of Berlin taking in sights such as the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, Alexanderplatz, the former Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie and the inside of Emperor William Memorial Church. During our tour we see the East Side Gallery. Approximately 106 paintings by artists from all over the world cover this memorial for freedom and make it the largest open air gallery in the world. This afternoon we visit the Alte Nationalgalerie, home to a collection from the era between the French Revolution and the First World War and featuring artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Menzel, as well as works by Monet, Renoir, Cézanne and Degas.
Day 3
After our morning lecture with Peter, our guided tour of the Gemäldegalerie explores one of the world’s finest collections of European art dating from the 13th to the 18th centuries including works by Raphael, van Eyck, Holbein, Caravaggio, Canaletto, Rubens, Vermeer and Rembrandt. We then enjoy an included ‘Kaffee and Kuchen’ break in the Reichstag followed by a tour of Sir Norman Foster’s great restoration.
Day 4
After our final lecture with Peter this morning, with our guide we travel to Potsdam, a town set amongst woodlands and lakes with opulent palaces and gardens including the delightful Sanssouci Palace created in 1744 by Frederick the Great as his summer residence. This afternoon we visit the Knobelsdorff Wing of Charlottenburg Palace with our guide. Set in a beautiful park and a favourite palace of Frederick the Great, it was built as a summer residence for the wife of Friedrich I, Sophie Charlotte. With breathtakingly splendid rooms some of which are lavishly decorated in the rococo style, one of the highlights is the largest collection of French 18th century paintings outside France.
Day 5
After checking out of our hotel, our audio guided tour at the Daniel Libeskind designed Jewish Museum Berlin introduces us to exhibitions covering two millennia of German Jewish history. We then return to Berlin Airport for our direct scheduled flight back to London.
