Day 2 – Nancy guided tour, Musée des Beaux-Arts & Villa Bergeret
Guided tour of Nancy, Lorraine’s historic capital, which was transformed by Stanislas Leczinski, Duke of Lorraine, making it a model of 18th century town planning and whose crowning glory is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the grand neoclassical Place Stanislas – guided tour of the Musée des Beaux-Arts introduces us to a fine collection of 14th to 20th century European art including works by Delacroix, Manet, Monet, Utrillo and Modigliani, as well as over 600 pieces of Daum Glassware on display – Villa Bergeret, built in 1903 by architect Lucien Weissenburger as the home of postcard printer Albert Bergeret, is an excellent example of Art Nouveau in Nancy and the decor is a brilliant demonstration of the expertise of the School of Nancy.
Day 3 – Daum glass workshop & Le Jardin Botanique du Montet
Established at the end of the 19th century, Daum glass’s renown was originally linked to the Ecole de Nancy movement and this morning our visit to the glass workshop at the Centre Européen de Recherches et de Formation aux Arts Verriers (CERFAV) at Vannes le Châtel explores the origins of one of France’s greatest glassworks – Le Jardin Botanique du Montet extends to 27 hectares with over 12,000 plants from every continent.
Day 4 – Basilique de Saint- Nicolas de Port & Châteaux de Haroué and de Lunéville
The current Basilique de Saint- Nicolas de Port, a pilgrimage site supposedly holding the relics of the patron saint of the Duchy of Lorraine, Saint Nicholas, dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries and has fine Renaissance painted glass windows by Nicolas Droguet of Lyon, Valentin Bousch of Strasbourg and Hans von Kulmbach and Veit Hirsvogel from Nuremberg – built by architect Germain Boffrand in 1720, Château de Haroué like a calendar has 365 windows, 52 chimneys, 12 towers and 4 bridges – Château de Lunéville belonged to the Dukes of Lorraine from the 13th century and was rebuilt as the ‘Versailles of Lorraine’ by Duke Léopold from 1703 to 1723.
Day 5 Musée de l’Ecole de Nancy & Musée Lorrain
The influential Musée de l’Ecole de Nancy is home to a wonderful collection of furniture, fabrics and jewellery, as well as the fanciful glassware of Emile Gallé, founder of the Ecole de Nancy – once home to the dukes of Lorraine, the regal Renaissance Palais Ducal now houses the Musée Lorrain which first opened its doors to the public 1850 and whose collection is representative of the artistic and cultural life of the region.
