The First World War 100th anniversary tours

The First World War was a turning point in world history. It claimed the lives of over 16 million people across the globe and had an impact on the lives of everyone. 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the beginning of conflict, supposedly The War to End All Wars, and is a chance to pay our respects to the fallen. What better way of doing that than by taking your group on its very own First World War 100th anniversary tour?

Today, the French and Flanders landscape still tell the story of the War with museums, monuments and beautifully maintained cemeteries. Many of the museums will be organising exhibitions and events to commemorate the anniversary. Since 1927 the Last Post has been played beneath the Menin Gate by buglers from the Ypres fire station as a constant reminder that the fallen are never forgotten.

Our suggested itinerary, in the company of a specialist battlefield guide, takes in the sights and monuments of the infamous Ypres Salient in Belgium including a visit to the Passchendaele Museum and finishing beneath the Menin Gate for the deeply moving Last Post ceremony. A full day is spent on the battlefields of the Somme, the scene of perhaps the most famous of all the Great War’s battles. For those groups choosing a 5 day tour, our visit to Arras pays tribute to the 35,000 British soldiers lost on its battlefields, before we descend into the vast subterranean city of underground tunnels at Carriere Wellington.

When putting together your tailor made itinerary, we can give you help and advice choosing visits and locations that will feed the particular interests of your members. Some may wish to pay their respects to a relative at a particular monument or cemetery and, of course, this can be worked into your particular itinerary.

With your choice of 3* or 4* hotels, travelling to France and Belgium by coach or by Eurostar and every tour in the company of a specialist battlefield guide, call Michael or Damian in our sales team to discuss your ideas and then, in close consultation with you, we will fine tune the itinerary until you have the perfect tour at the right price for your group.
