The Beauty of Slovenia & Lake Bled
From the soaring peaks of the Julian Alps and the subterranean world of the Postojna Caves, to sparkling Lake Bled with a tiny Baroque chapel on a picturesque island and dramatic Bled Castle looming above and the beautiful Adriatic coast, Slovenia has it all. In Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital, Baroque facades mix with Art Nouveau splendours and the 20th century architecture of native Jože Plečnik.
Bordering Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia, Slovenia mixes warm sea breezes from its eastern Adriatic coastline with the cool mountain air of the Alps, while more than half of this small country’s surface is covered in forest.
Our 4* hotel is based in Bled close to the shore of its beautiful lake and on our first morning a guided tour explores Slovenia's most popular resort finishing at Bled Castle, perched atop a steep cliff high above the lake. Dating back to the early 11th century, this medieval fortress boasts towers, ramparts, moats and a terrace offering magnificent views.
Bled Island and the Church of the Assumption beckon from the shore and a ride to the middle of Lake Bled by a traditional pletna (gondola) sets us down at the monumental South Staircase (Južno Stopnišče) built in 1655.
A full day in Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital, begins with a guided tour of the Baroque Old Town which is nestled at the foot of Castle Hill, the Art Nouveau mansions and some of the creations of the world renowned architect Jože Plečnik, a master of early-modern, minimalist design.
From city to the sea. Departing from the beach resort of Portorož, we take a beautiful cruise 4km up the Adriatic coast to the medieval town of Piran. Its Old Town is a gem of Venetian Gothic architecture, and the medieval layout with narrow streets and compact houses, give the whole area a typical Mediterranean look.
The cave system at Postojna is a series of caverns, halls and passages some 24km long and two million years old whose stalagmite and stalactite formations are unequalled anywhere. You can choose to see 5km of the cave on a 90 minute tour aboard electric train which takes you to the Great Mountain cavern.

And here’s the final word on Slovenia:
“None of our U3A group had ever been to Slovenia before so we didn’t know what to expect. Our 4* hotel at Lake Bled was only a 45 minute drive from the airport and had a truly magical setting, with both alpine and lake views towards the iconic church on the island. Our tour included visits right across Slovenia from the alpine countryside around Lake Bled to the flatter areas towards the Adriatic and the resorts of Piran and Portoroz, also taking in the capital Ljubljana with its riverside cafes, churches and markets. Some of us also went to the amazing Postojna cave complex close to the Italian border. Everybody was impressed with Slovenia, a small country with a small population, where everyone was welcoming and friendly. This holiday was voted by our group as one of the best ever thanks largely to our superb local tour guide and driver as well as all the arrangements provided by Tailored Travel.”
