Itinerary
Day 1
We meet at our designated pick up points and transfer by coach to London Gatwick Airport for our direct scheduled flight to Krakow. On arrival in Krakow we are met by our guide who will accompany us on all our day trips and airport transfers. We then check in at the 4* Mercure Hotel Krakow Stare Miasto in Krakow for a five night stay. A welcome set three course dinner without drinks is included in our hotel this evening, and the remaining four nights are on bed and breakfast basis.
Day 2
This morning we visit The Cloth Hall. With a splendid Renaissance edifice and an ornate roof adorned with grotesque masks, is the world's oldest shopping mall having been in business in the middle of the Grand Square for 700 years. During our visit we see the 19th century Polish Art Gallery. Comprising of four rooms, the collection is refreshingly small, giving proper attention to each piece, some of which are enormous and all of which are gorgeously framed. This afternoon we visit St Mary's Basilica, Krakow's principal church since the 14th century, and particularly famous for its wooden altar carved by Veit Stoss.
Day 3
Our day begins with a visit to the National Museum in Krakow, featuring Leonardo di Vinci’s ‘Lady with an Ermine’. We continue to the magnificent Wieliczka Salt Mines, established in 1978 as a UNESCO World Cultural & Heritage Site. Nine centuries of mining in Wieliczka produced 200 kilometres of passages and 2,040 caverns. The tourist route starts 64 m deep and ends 135 m below ground level. The highlight of the tour is the underground cathedral where the wall decorations, altar, religious statues, floor, ceiling and even the chandeliers are all made of salt. We also see the world's biggest museum of mining with unique centuries old equipment among its exhibits.
Day 4
Today begins with a visit to the stately halls and exquisite chambers of Wawel Royal Castle, home to three dynasties of Poland's monarchs. Its collection of 16th century monumental Flemish tapestries is matchless. Wawel Cathedral, Poland's national sanctuary with 1000-year-old history, was the coronation site of Polish monarchs and is now home to a wonderful art collection from Gothic to Renaissance to Baroque to Classicist and to Modern. This afternoon we visit Bishop of Erasm Palace, which presents works of medieval and modern Polish art from a collection which has been assembled since the 19th century, on display in the historic interiors of the Bishop Erazmus Ciolek Palace.
Day 5
Today we visit with our guide the 630 year old Jagiello University buildings, including the Collegium Maius (The Grand College). Rebuilt in the 15th century as a splendid late Gothic edifice around a vast courtyard with surrounding arcades, its alumni include the astronomer Copernicus and Pope John Paul II. This afternoon we visit the Ethnographic Museum of Krakow, built in the late 14th century, then significantly extended in the 16th century, at which time it acquired its Renaissance appearance. The permanent exhibition features the reconstructed interiors of traditional Polish peasant cottages and workshops, folk costumes, craft and trade exhibits, extraordinary nativity scenes, and folk and religious painting and woodcarving.
Day 6
After checking out of our hotel this morning we return to Krakow Airport for our direct scheduled flight to Bristol Airport and onwards coach travel back to our original pick up points.
