Itinerary

Day 1

We depart by private executive coach from our designated pick up points. En route to our hotel we visit the National Trust’s Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire, built between 1759 and 1765 for the Curzon family who have lived in the area since the 12th century. Kedleston boasts the most complete and least altered sequence of Robert Adam interiors in England. We continue to the centrally located 4* Mercure St Paul's Hotel & Spa at Sheffield for a four night stay on a half board basis.

Day 2

This morning we visit the English Heritage’s Bolsover Castle, a unique survival of a Stuart ‘prodigy house’. Bolsover Castle was designed solely for pleasure and extravagant display, a fashionable retreat into an imaginary golden age of chivalry. We continue with our Blue Badge guide to Wentworth Woodhouse, one of the grandest stately homes in the country. During our guided tour we discover the formal staterooms including the Marble Salon, Whistlejacket and the Painted Drawing Room. The tour encompasses the rise and fall of the house from its beginnings in the 1600s to its time as a family home and teacher training college, right through to the present day and the work of the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust. Time is then at leisure to explore the gardens, home to a wildflower meadow, ancient trees, shaded woodland copses and 18th Century follies.

Day 3

With our Blue Badge guide we visit Bakewell this morning, famous for the production of the ‘tart’, or Bakewell Pudding as it is known locally. This afternoon we enjoy a guided tour of the Mill Yard at Cromford Mills, the birthplace of the modern factory system. Built in 1771 by Sir Richard Arkwright, it is the world’s first successful waterpowered cotton spinning mill and a cornerstone of the Industrial Revolution. During our tour, we discover how Sir Richard Arkwright went from the humblest of beginnings to become the richest commoner in the country.

Day 4

Our Blue Badge guide meets us at our hotel this morning and accompanies us throughout the day. We firstly visit Chatsworth, one of Britain’s best loved historic houses and estates, offering something for everyone to enjoy, from famous works of art and the spectacular fountains in the garden to the finest shopping, food and drink and many miles of free walks. The home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire is set in the magnificent landscape of Derbyshire’s Peak District National Park, and is seen in the film of ‘Pride and Prejudice’. This afternoon we visit Eyam. Struck by the Bubonic Plague in 1665 when a flea infested bundle of cloth was delivered to tailor George Vicars from London, the village of Eyam went into voluntary isolation. The Plague raged in the village for 14 months and it is stated that it killed at least 260 villagers with only 83 villagers surviving. During our guided tour we visit the Museum which tells the story of the Plague and its effects on the village sealing themselves off from the surrounding villages to prevent the spread of the disease.

Day 5

After checking out of our hotel and before returning home we visit Crich Tramway Village. Nestling high up in the heart of Derbyshire overlooking the famous Derwent Valley, Crich Tramway Village is a lovingly restored period village that is also home to the National Tramway Museum and its world-renowned archives. Taking carefully selected comfort stops en route, we return back to our original pick up points.

Given the historic nature of the places visited, a certain degree of walking will be involved, and this holiday may not be suitable for those with mobility problems. Price based on twin share.
