Itinerary
Day 1
We meet at Gatwick airport for our direct scheduled Easyjet flight to Valencia. On arrival we are met by our local tour manager who will accompany us on all transfers and day excursions. We firstly visit the José Benlliure Museum, dedicated to the life and times of this famous Valencian painter. The museum also displays Benlliure’s personal collection of art, and recreates the atmosphere of a middle to high class bourgeoisie home during the time of the Spanish Restoration. We continue to the centrally located 4* Melia Plaza Hotel in Valencia for a four night stay. A welcome dinner is served in our hotel this evening.
Day 2
Our morning guided walking tour of Valencia, Spain’s third largest city, takes in the 13th century Cathedral, the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the city’s triangular main square and home to the town hall, the Old Silk Exchange, a World Heritage Site, and the Colegio del Patriarca, built in the mid-16th century. The rest of the day is at leisure in Valencia.
Day 3
This morning we visit the City of Arts and Sciences complex, where you have free time to explore this futuristic ‘city within a city’ made up of five main areas: the Hemisfèric (IMAX cinema and digital projections), the Umbracle (a landscaped vantage point), the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum (interactive science), the Oceanográfico (aquarium) and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía (operatic and ballet programmes). We visit the Museo de Bellas Artes this afternoon, home to a fine collection of works by primitive Valencian painters plus works by El Greco, Velázquez, Murillo and Goya and sculptures by Mariano Benlliure. The museum also exhibits works by Sorolla which spans from 1878 to 1884, just before his stay in Rome.
Day 4
We visit Sagunto this morning, a walled and fortified town 25km outside Valencia. Our guided tour on arrival contemplates the town’s history including the bloody siege by Hannibal in the 3rd century BC which set in motion the Second Punic War and the several reminders of the Roman occupation. We visit the port area of Valencia this afternoon to see the Palau de la Musica, Valencia’s prestigious concert hall. A farewell dinner is served in our hotel this evening.
Day 5
After checking out of our hotel we visit the Museo de la Cerámica, home to a fine array of ceramics spanning every era. We then visit the Museo del Patriarca (museum of the Corpous Christi Seminary School), a place where priests were educated and trained during a period of extreme pro-Catholicism with the growing threat of the competing Protestantism. The museum is home to an extensive collection of paintings by such greats as Francisco Ribalta, Juan Sariñena, and Luis de Morales. We continue to Valencia airport for our direct scheduled Easyjet flight back to Gatwick.
