Itinerary
Day 1
We depart in our executive coach from our designated pick up point and en route to Falmouth we visit the National Trust’s Clevedon Court in North Somerset. The house dates back to the medieval period and has been the home of the Elton family since 1709. We continue to the 3* Penmere Manor Hotel at Falmouth for a four night stay on half board basis.
Day 2
We spend this morning at leisure in St Ives, a traditional fishing town which has also become world famous as an art centre with numerous studios, shops and galleries throughout its cobbled streets. You may choose to visit the Barbara Hepworth Museum. We then enjoy a guided tour of the Tate Gallery. This afternoon we continue to Penlee House at Penzance, built in 1865 as a gracious Victorian home and now a first class gallery and museum. Our guided tour on arrival introduces us to the skills and craftsmanship of painting in West Cornwall in the late 19th and early 20th century, usually including the world famous ‘Newlyn School’ and Lamorna Group artists.
Day 3
Our guided tour of Pencarrow House introduces us to the family home of the Molseworth–St Aubyns. The Georgian house contains a fine collection of pictures, furniture and porcelain and the grounds include a beautifully proportioned sunken Italian garden and over 700 different varieties of rhododendrons. This afternoon we enjoy a guided tour at Prideaux Place, set into the hill above the fishing port of Padstow. Completed in 1592, this has been the home of the Prideaux family for over 400 years, and is filled with treasures including royal and family portraits, fine furniture and the Prideaux Porcelain Collection. Our guided tour concludes with an included cream tea.
Day 4
This morning we have a pre-booked guided visit to the Eden Project. The Eden Project houses plants, crops and landscapes from the humid tropics and warm temperate regions including olives, vines and citrus fruit from the Mediterranean, South Africa and California. We visit the award winning Lost Gardens of Heligan this afternoon, comprising over two hundred acres of superb working Victorian gardens including some eighty acres of walled gardens, summerhouses, lawns, lakes and ponds, huge productive gardens and fruithouses and a twenty two acre subtropical jungle.
Day 5
After checking out of our hotel we enjoy a guided tour of Exeter Cathedral, one of England’s finest examples of decorated Gothic architecture. We continue to Bristol to visit Brunel’s SS Great Britain, the world’s first great ocean liner, and explore the beautifully recreated First Class Dining Saloon, steerage quarters and new Engine Room. We have time for tea and coffee before returning to our original pick up point.
