Itinerary

Thomas Abbott graduated in Psychology and Art History at Carleton College, Minnesota, and studied at the Louvre School of Art History in Paris. 1987 he moved to Berlin leading tours in Germany, specialising, of course, in the German capital. While in Berlin, Tom commenced and completed his graduate studies in the history of art and architecture, specialising in the art of the Italian and German Baroque.

Day 1

We meet at our designated pick up points and transfer by private coach to Bristol Airport for our direct scheduled flight to Berlin. On arrival in Berlin we meet Thomas Abbott who will accompany us on all transfers and included daily excursions. We then transfer by private executive coach to the 4* Park Inn Hotel in Berlin for a five night stay. Dinner without drinks is included in our hotel this evening and on our last night and the remaining three nights are on bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2

This morning we enjoy a guided coach tour of Berlin taking in sights such as the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, Alexanderplatz, the former Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie and the inside of Emperor William Memorial Church. We then have an audio tour of the Daniel Libeskind designed Jewish Museum Berlin, home to exhibitions covering two millennia of German Jewish history. Later this afternoon we enjoy an included ‘Kaffee and Kuchen’ break in The Reichstag followed by a tour of Sir Norman Foster’s great restoration.

Day 3

This morning we have a short coach trip to the Kulturforum built in the 1950s in West Berlin as most of the once unified city's cultural assets became inaccessible behind the Berlin Wall. Some of the finest examples of European art of the 13th- 16th centuries are to be found here in the Gemaldegalerie; there is a good lunch to be found in the museum cafe as well. Nearby we visit the Neue Nationalgalerie. Housed in an outstanding building by Mies van der Rohe, we find an interesting contrast as here are works of 20th century art from Europe and the USA by the likes of Francis Bacon, Salvador Dalí, Paul Klee and Edvard Munch.

Day 4

We travel to Potsdam today, a town set amongst woodlands and lakes with opulent palaces and gardens including the delightful Sanssouci Palace created in 1744 by Frederick the Great as his summer residence. After time for lunch in the downtown Dutch Quarter, we visit Cecilienhof Palace built by Emperor William II for his eldest son, Crown Prince William, and his wife, Crown Princess Cecilie. Another contrast, the Palace was built between 1914 and 17 in the layout of a Tudor manor house. It was here that Churchill, Stalin and Truman met for the Potsdam Conference in July 1945. En route back to our hotel we visit Die Brucke Museum, housing a comprehensive collection of German Expressionist art.

Day 5

Today we walk with Tom to Museum Island and visit the Alte Nationalgalerie, home to a collection from the era between the French Revolution and the First World War featuring work by Caspar David Friedrich, Monet, Renoir and Degas among many others. We will have time to visit some of the other museums on the island including the Altes Museum housing a vast range of ancient artefacts from the Greek and Roman eras and the largest collection of Etruscan art outside Italy or the Neues Museum with the remarkable Bust of Queen Nefertiti created around 1340 BC.

Day 6

This morning we visit Charlottenburg Palace. Set in a beautiful park and a favourite palace of Frederick the Great, it was built as a summer residence for the wife of Friedrich I, Sophie Charlotte. With breathtakingly splendid rooms some of which are lavishly decorated in the Rococo style, one of the highlights is the largest collection of French 18th century paintings outside France. We visit the Theater Bau Wing which is the Käthe Kollwitz Museum. After free time for a light lunch, we return to Berlin Airport for our direct scheduled flight to the UK, and onwards private coach travel back to our original pick up points.

NB: Please note we reserve the right to alter the above itinerary if required for operational reasons.
