Itinerary
Day 1
We meet at our designated pick up points and transfer by private coach to Birmingham Airport for our direct scheduled Easyjet flight to Berlin. On arrival in Berlin we meet our local professional guide and transfer by private executive coach to the 4* Park Inn Hotel in Berlin for a five night stay. A welcome dinner is included in our hotel this evening.
Day 2
This morning we enjoy a guided tour of Berlin taking in sights such as the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, Alexanderplatz, the former Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie and the inside of Emperor William Memorial Church. This afternoon we enjoy an included ‘Kaffee and Kuchen’ break in the Reichstag followed by a tour of Sir Norman Foster’s great restoration.
Day 3
Museum Island is our destination today with our guide, one of the finest museum complexes in the world. We firstly enjoy a guided tour at the Alte Nationalgalerie, home to a collection from the era between the French Revolution and the First World War and featuring artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Menzel, as well as works by Monet, Renoir, Cézanne and Degas. The rest of the day is at leisure and you may choose to enjoy a cruise on the River Spree. We make our own way back to the hotel this afternoon.
Day 4
We enjoy a guided tour at the Gemäldegalerie this morning, housing one of the world’s finest collections of European art dating from the 13th to the 18th centuries including works by Raphael, van Eyck, Holbein, Caravaggio, Canaletto, Rubens, Vermeer and Rembrandt. Our audio guided tour at the Daniel Libeskind designed Jewish Museum Berlin this afternoon introduces us to exhibitions covering two millennia of German Jewish history.
Day 5
We travel to Potsdam with our guide today, a town set amongst woodlands and lakes with opulent palaces and gardens including the delightful Sanssouci Palace created in 1744 by Frederick the Great as his summer residence. This afternoon we visit Neues Palace. One of Germany’s most beautiful palaces, this imposing Baroque structure on the main avenue in Park Sanssouci was built for Frederick the Great to initial plans by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff in 1750. The vast three wing structure comprises over 200 richly adorned rooms and has many interesting sculptures.
Day 6
After checking out of our hotel we visit the Knobelsdorff Wing of Charlottenburg Palace. Set in a beautiful park and a favourite palace of Frederick the Great, it was built as a summer residence for the wife of Friedrich I, Sophie Charlotte. With breathtakingly splendid rooms some of which are lavishly decorated in the rococo style, one of the highlights is the largest collection of French 18th century paintings outside France. We then return to Berlin Airport for our direct scheduled Easyjet flight to Birmingham, and onwards private coach travel back to our original pick up points.
