Itinerary
Day 1
We meet at our designated pick up points and transfer by private coach to Bristol Airport for our direct scheduled flight to Dublin. On arrival we are met by our local professional guide who will accompany us on all transfers and daily excursions, and we travel by private coach to central Dublin. A guided introductory tour on arrival gives us a great insight to the city of writers and poets, and takes in such sights as Ha’penny Bridge, O’Connell Street and Christchurch Cathedral. We continue to the centrally located 3* Academy Hotel in Dublin for a four night stay. A welcome dinner is included in our hotel this evening.
Day 2
This morning our guide accompanies us on our visit to the National Gallery of Ireland, housing 13,000 works of art, including works by Titian, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Poussin and Gainsborough. We continue to Trinity College to see the Book of Kells. Written around the year 800 AD, the book contains the four gospels and is one of the most beautifully illuminated manuscripts in the world.
Day 3
Killruddery House and Gardens is our destination this morning. Home to the Brabazon family (the Earls of Meath) since 1618, Killruddery House is the most successful Elizabethan-Revival mansion in Ireland, and the most fashionable of its time. The 17th Century Gardens survive in their original formal layout, with some 18th and 19th Century additions. We continue with our guide to Powerscourt House and Gardens set in 14,000 acres with delightful lakes, ornamental hedges and gardens. The house was gutted by fire in 1974 but recently has been reborn as an exceptional tourist destination. The entrance hall now features an exhibition bringing to life the rich history of the estate, while the double height Georgian ballroom has been restored and hosts weddings and corporate events.
Day 4
We enjoy a guided tour at Dublin Castle this morning, dating back to 1230 and located in the heart of the city. Here we visit the Chester Beatty Library containing a rich collection of manuscripts, prints, miniature paintings and early printed books. We also visit the State Apartments at Dublin Castle, the former private and public rooms of the Viceroys and the Viceregal Court, the seat of the executive and the focus of fashionable social life. This afternoon we have a guided tour at the Hugh Lane Gallery, one of Ireland’s foremost collections of modern and contemporary art with works ranging from the Impressionist masterpieces of Manet, Monet, Renoir and Degas to those by leading national and international contemporary artists.
Day 5
With our guide this morning we visit EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum. Recently awarded Europe’s Leading Tourist Attraction at the World Travel Awards, EPIC depicts the moving and unforgettable stories of those who left the island of Ireland, and how they influenced and shaped the world. EPIC embraces the past and the future with 1,500 years of Irish history and culture housed in its atmospheric vaults. We then transfer to Dublin Airport for our direct scheduled flight to Bristol, and onwards coach travel back to our original pick up points.
