Itinerary
Day 1
We depart from our designated pick up point and en route to our hotel we visit Felley Priory Hall and Gardens (entrance free to RHS members). The Priory was founded in 1156 and dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536. Later that century a new smaller house was built, which was further added to in 1886. The garden was designed in 1976, when the hedges were planted, and the herbaceous borders begun. We continue to Cascade Gardens set in Bosnall Village and inspired by Japanese gardens and philosophy. We continue to the 4* Best Western Plus Lee Wood Hotel in Buxton for a four night stay on a half board basis.
Day 2
This morning with our Blue Badge Guide we enjoy a guided tour of Haddon Hall. This remarkable fortified manor house dating from the 12th century is surrounded by terraced Elizabethan gardens. We then continue to Chatsworth, one of Britain’s best loved historic houses and estates, offering something for everyone to enjoy, from famous works of art and the spectacular fountains in the garden to the finest shopping, food and drink and many miles of free walks. The home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire is set in the magnificent landscape of Derbyshire’s Peak District National Park, and is seen in the film of ‘Pride and Prejudice’.
Day 3
This morning after an introductory tour of the town by our Blue Badge guide, we enjoy time to explore Buxton at leisure among its world famous Georgian and Victorian architecture. In the afternoon we visit The Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre in Macclesfield to discover more about Jodrell Bank and the fascinating science that takes place here with an informative talk. We
Day 4
With our Blue badge Guide we visit Renishaw Hall and Gardens, home to the Sitwell family for almost 400 years. After our guided tour of the hall, there is some free time to explore the Italianate gardens laid out by Sir G. Sitwell, the eccentric grandfather of the current owner, Alexandra Sitwell. After we visit Thornbridge Hall surrounded by 12 acres of quintessential English gardens, a perfect example of Victorian work ethic.
Day 5
After checking out of our hotel and en route home we visit the National Trust’s Biddulph Grange Garden, one of Britain’s most exciting and unusual gardens with a series of connected ‘compartments’. Unique features at the garden include upside down trees, a formal Italian garden, Egyptian Court and a tranquil Chinese garden. We then continue on to the Dorothy Clive Garden at Willoughbridge, a charming English country garden. Taking carefully selected comfort stops en route, we return back to our original pick up points.
