Itinerary
Day 1
We depart by private executive coach from our designated pick up points, and en route to Folkestone we meet our professional Battlefield guide. On arrival at Folkestone we board our Eurotunnel crossing to Calais. We then visit the Canadian War Memorial at Vimy Ridge and Loos Memorial at Dud Corner Cemetery, commemorating 20,605 British soldiers. We then continue to the 4* Best Western Plus Alize Hotel in Mouscron for a three night stay. A welcome dinner is included in our hotel this evening.
Day 2
Today our battlefield guide takes us to see some of the sights and monuments that formed part of the infamous Ypres Salient in Belgium. We visit the Ploegsteert Memorial to the Missing, before looking at the site of the Christmas Truce of 1914. We then visit the famous Hooge Crater Museum which houses a collection of arms and equipment from the War. This afternoon we visit the Tyne Cot British and Commonwealth Cemetery and Memorial, the largest of its type in the world. On arrival in Ypres we see the Menin Gate which bears the names of almost 55,000 men and 44 Old Cheltonians whose bodies were never found. We then have free time to visit Cloth Hall and the chocolate shops in Ypres. In the evening we attend the deeply moving ‘Last Post’ Ceremony under the Menin Gate which bears the names of almost 55,000 men whose bodies were never found. Dinner is included at a carefully selected restaurant in Ypres this evening.
Day 3
This morning we descend into Carriere Wellington in Arras, a vast subterranean city of underground tunnels constructed by New Zealand miners during 1917 where at one stage over 20,000 men sheltered. We continue to the Arras Memorial, inside the entrance to Faubourg d'Amiens Cemetery. The memorial commemorates nearly 35,000 soldiers of the British, South African and New Zealand forces with no known grave. Most of those commemorated were killed in the Battle of Arras, fought April - May 1917. This afternoon we visit one of the most impressive cemeteries in the Arras area at Caberet Rouge. A farewell dinner is included in our hotel this evening.
Day 4
After checking out of our hotel this morning we explore the battlefields of the Somme, the scene of one of the most significant battles of the War. We visit the largest British mine crater at La Boisselle, Devonshire Trench, Flat Iron Copse and the largest British memorial in the world at Thiepval. This afternoon we visit the Redan Ridge No 2 Cemetery. We continue to Calais for our return Eurotunnel crossing to Folkestone, and onwards coach travel back to our original pick up points.
