Itinerary
Day 1
We meet at our designated pick up points and transfer by coach to Gatwick Airport for our direct scheduled Easyjet flight to Venice. On arrival in Venice we are met by our art historian and professional tour manager, Tom Abbott, and transfer by boat to our centrally located 3* Hotel Ala in Venice, where we stay five nights. This afternoon we visit Ca’ d’Oro, the House of Gold, one of the most beautiful Gothic palaces on the Grand Canal and home to an excellent art collection, including works by Titan and Francesco Guardi. A welcome dinner is included at a carefully selected restaurant close to our hotel this evening, and the remaining four nights are on bed and breakfast basis.
Day 2
Our first full day in Venice begins with a guided walking tour taking in such sights as St Mark’s Square, described by Napoleon as ‘the finest drawing room in Europe’, the Basilica of St Mark and the Rialto Bridge. Our tour concludes with a visit to the Loggia Museum within the Basilica. This afternoon we visit the Doges Palace. Located at the entrance to St Marks Square, the palace is where the Venetian Republic was once ruled from.
Day 3
Today we enjoy a full day private boat trip to the neighbouring islands just off Venice. We visit Murano, the island famous for its glass making. Then on to Burano, the most colourful of the islands with brightly coloured houses, such as the well-known Casa Bepi, lining the waterways and easily recognisable from the tilting tower of its church. Our final stop, Torcello, is a complete contrast; barely inhabited, the central piazza and its ancient buildings are a haunting reminder of a bygone era. A light lunch is included on our arrival on Torcello.
Day 4
This morning we visit the Galleria dell’Accademia with its wonderful collection of Venetian art from the 14th to 18th century including works by Titan, Carpaccio, Tintoretto and Veronese. In the afternoon we explore the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal. Home to the most important collection in Italy of European and American art of the first half of the 20th century, we see works from Picasso, Mondrian, Dali and Pollock.
Day 5
Our first visit of the day is to the Querini Stampalia Museum, home to one of the richest art collections in Venice. With over 400 paintings by Venetian, Italian and Flemish artists, our guided tour introduces us to works by artists such as Pietro Longhi, Gabriel Bella, Lorenzo di Credi and Luca Giordano. We continue to Ca’Rezzonica Museum, a palazzo on the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro sestiere of Venice. Today, it is a public museum dedicated to 18th century Venice.
Day 6
After checking out of our hotel this morning, we visit the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. One of the greatest churches in the city, it has the status of a minor basilica. We then transfer by boat to Marco Polo Airport for our direct scheduled flight back to London Gatwick and onwards coach travel back to our original pick up points.
