Day 1 - Lisbon
Scheduled flight to Lisbon - transfer with our tour manager in our private executive coach to the 4* Hotel Fenix in Lisbon.
Day 2 - Lisbon guided tour, Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, Museu Nacional do Azulejo & Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga
Full day in Lisbon - guided tour of Lisbon taking in sights such as the Belem Tower, Pedro Square, the Medieval Quarter of Alfarma and the beautiful 16th century Hieronymite Cathedral -the beautiful 16th century Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, the most impressive symbol of Portugal’s power and wealth during the Age of Discovery, was constructed in 1502 to commemorate Vasco da Gama’s voyage to India - the Museu Nacional do Azulejo, located in the convent cloisters of Convento da Madre de Deus and dating back to 1509, has decorative panels, individual tiles and photographs tracing the evolution of tile making from its introduction by the Moors - the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga houses works by artists such as Hans Memling, Raphael and Tintoretto and its chapel is a fine example of 18th century Portuguese Baroque art and architecture.
Day 3 - Palácio Nacional de Queluz, Cascais & Palácio Nacional da Pena
Palácio Nacional de Queluz was commissioned in 1747 when the architect Mateus Vicente de Oliveira transformed Prince Dom Pedro’s occasional hunting lodge into a summer palace now known as the ‘Portuguese Versailles’ - travelling along the picturesque Atlantic coastline and passing the cosmopolitan village of Estoril, we stop at the fishing village of Cascais - head inland to the idyllic mountain town of Sintra, adored by artists and writers from all over the world, where we have time at leisure for lunch - visit the UNESCO listed Palácio Nacional da Pena at Sintra, the summer residence of the Portuguese royal family during the 15th and 16th centuries and the best example of a medieval palace in Portugal.
Day 4 - Fundação Medeiros e Almeida & Museu Gulbenkian
Guided tour of the Fundação Medeiros e Almeida in Lisbon with a fine collection of European paintings, furniture, tapestries, sacred art, jewellery and china - guided tour of the Museu Gulbenkian, one of Europe's unsung treasures with a magnificent collection of Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Islamic, Asian and European art including masterpieces by Frans Hals, Rubens, Rembrandt, Fragonard and Gainsborough.
Day 5 - Palácio Nacional de Fronteria
Morning at the Palácio Nacional de Fronteria where the Duke of Wellington lived when defending Lisbon from Napoleon's army - transfer to the airport for our scheduled flight home.
