Day 2 – Bruges

Guided tour of Bruges, famous for lace making, chocolate and its picturesque network of canals and whose historic city centre is included on Unesco’s World Heritage List – a short cruise on the picturesque canals of Bruges (not included in the cost of the tour) enables us to see the city from a different perspective – rest of the day free at leisure in Bruges.

Day 3 – Ghent, ‘In Flanders Field’ & ‘The Last Post’

Guided tour of Ghent, once the ancient capital of Flanders and birthplace of Emperor Charles V – at the ‘In Flanders Field’ interactive museum we get an impression of life during the First World War through the use of historical objects, documentary films, audio visual reminders and scale models – at Ypres the day concludes with a visit to ‘The Last Post’, a deeply moving ceremony which takes place under the vast arch of the Menin Gate.

Day 4 – Antwerp, Diamond Museum & Diamond Land

Guided tour of Antwerp takes in sights such as the Great Market Square, Town Hall, Butcher’s Guild House and the Cathedral of our Lady – at the Diamond Museum we discover the significance of the industry to Antwerp’s economic success since the 15th century and contemplate the origin of diamonds and the glittering ornamental gems they become – at Diamond Land we learn about the diamond grading process.

Day 5 – St Omer & Cristallerie d’Arques

Time at leisure in St Omer to explore its bourgeois 17th century buildings and Flemish style architecture – the glass factory at Cristallerie d’Arques employs 11,000 people and produces 5 million items of glassware each day – travel to Calais for our P&O Ferries Channel crossing to Dover and onward travel to our original pick up points.
