Itinerary
Day 1
We depart in our private executive coach from our designated pick up points. En route to our hotel we visit the National Trust’s Powis Castle & Garden. Laid out under the influence of Italian and French styles, this world famous garden retains its original lead statues, and the medieval castle contains one of the finest collections of paintings and furniture in Wales. We continue to the 3* St Kilda Hotel in Llandudno for a five night stay on half board basis.
Day 2
This morning we enjoy some time at leisure in Llandudno. We then enjoy an included light lunch and talk at Llanfair PG on Anglesey where Britain’s very first Women’s Institute was formed 100 years ago on 16th September 1915 under the auspices of the Agricultural Organisation Society. This afternoon we visit the National Trust’s Plas Newydd Country House and Gardens. Associated with the 1st Marquess of Anglesey, who commanded the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo, Plas Newydd is a beautiful 18th century country house with spectacular views across the Menai Strait to Snowdonia.
Day 3
Our Blue Badge guide meets us at our hotel this morning and accompanies us throughout the day. The National Slate Museum is our destination this morning, located in the Victorian workshops of the Dinorwig Quarry, and contemplating the history of the Welsh slate industry. You then may choose to join our optional scenic excursion on the Ffestiniog Narrow Gauge Railway from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog (those not taking the trip continue by coach to Porthmadog). We then visit the village of Portmeirion, designed and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975 in the style of an Italian village.
Day 4
We visit Caernarfon Castle this morning with our Blue Badge guide. Begun in 1283 as the definitive chapter in Edward I’s conquest of Wales, Caernarfon was constructed not only as a military stronghold but also as a seat of government and royal palace. The afternoon is at leisure in Caernarfon or, weather permitting, you may choose to join our optional excursion with our Blue Badge guide on the Snowdon Mountain Railway, Britain’s only rack and pinion railway.
Day 5
The 80 acre National Trust property at Bodnant Gardens is our destination this morning. Located above the River Conwy the gardens feature huge Italianate terraces and stunning views across Snowdonia. In the afternoon we continue to Conwy Castle. Completed in 1287 and one of Edward I’s chain of Welsh fortresses, Conwy Castle is a gritty, dark stoned fortress which has the rare ability to evoke an authentic medieval atmosphere. The rest of the day is at leisure in Conwy, and on an individual basis you may choose to visit the National Trust property of Aberconwy House, dating from the 14th century.
Day 6
After checking out of our hotel and before returning home we visit Llangollen where we have some time at leisure and you may choose to join our optional canal boat excursion through the beautiful Vale of Llangollen and across the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct built by Thomas Telford between 1795 and 1805.
