Itinerary

Day 1

We depart from our designated pick up points and en route to our hotel we visit the Compton Verney Art Gallery in Warwickshire for a guided tour. Located in the setting of a Grade 1 listed Robert Adam mansion, Compton Verney contains an outstanding collection of British, Neopolitan, Germanic and Chinese paintings. We continue to the 4* Mercure Shrewsbury Albrighton Hall Hotel and Spa for a four night stay on a half board basis.

Day 2

Our Blue Badge guide meets us at our hotel this morning and accompanies us throughout the day. We enjoy a visit to Ironbridge Gorge. The great symbol of the success of the iron industry can be found at the heart of the small town that bears its name. Cast in 1779 by Abraham Darby the 3rd, its great arch enthralled visitors who came from all over the world to admire its construction, as they still do today. The afternoon is at leisure to explore the Blists Hill Victorian Village. The Museum is a recreation of life in a Victorian community. Working factories, shops and cottages are authentic to the era, as are the ‘townsfolk’.

Day 3

Our guided tour of Shrewsbury this morning takes in sights such as the Norman Castle and St Mary’s Church, dating from 960 AD and boasting one of the tallest spires in England. The rest of the morning is at leisure to explore Shrewsbury, famous for its breezy black and white ‘magpie’ houses so typical of the Welsh Marches. This afternoon we visit the National Trust’s Powis Castle & Garden with our Blue Badge guide. Laid out under the influence of Italian and French styles, this world famous garden retains its original lead statues, and the medieval castle contains one of the finest collections of paintings and furniture in Wales.

Day 4

This morning we enjoy a guided walking tour of Chester with our Blue Badge guide, taking in sights such as the city walls, the cathedral and the unique 13th century ‘Rows’. This afternoon we visit the National Trust’s Erddig property, one of the most fascinating houses in Britain with an evocative range of outbuildings and state rooms displaying most of their original 18th and 19th century furnishings.

Day 5

After checking out of our hotel and before returning home we visit the National Trust’s Attingham Park, an elegant 18th century mansion, and home to a fine collection of ambassadorial silver, Italian furniture and Grand Tour paintings.
