Itinerary

Day 1

We meet at our designated pick up points and transfer by coach to Heathrow Airport for our direct scheduled British Airways flight to Istanbul. On arrival at Istanbul we are met by our guide who will accompany us on all transfers and included day excursions. We transfer in our private executive coach to the centrally located 4* Kent Hotel for a five night stay. A welcome set three course dinner without drinks is included at our hotel on the first evening, and the remaining four nights are on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2

This morning we meet our guide for a tour of the old city. We start by heading to the Sultanahmet district in the heart of historic Old Istanbul and our first visit is to the Blue Mosque. The masterwork of the 17th century Ottoman architect Sedefkâr Mehmet Aga, with its six minarets and a great cascade of domes, the Mosque is a great feature of the Istanbul skyline. We continue to the Byzantine Church of Hagia Sophia, among the finest architectural works in the world. Its wide, flat dome was a daring engineering feat in the 6th century and architects still marvel at the building's many innovations. This afternoon we visit the Church of St Saviour in Chora, dating back to the 11th century and home to a fine selection of Byzantine mosaics and frescoes. We then take a funicular to the famous Pierre Loti Café, named after the French novelist Julien Viaud, who was more popularly known as Pierre Loti. Time is at leisure at the café to enjoy tea and simit, a traditional Turkish bread.

Day 3

Today we explore the Asian part of the city and enjoy an included cruise on the Bosphorus. We board the boat at Sariyer, a charming fishing village where the Bosphorus meets the Black Sea. We have a perfect vantage point to see the Sultan’s palaces, Rumeli Fortress, the mansions and modern villas forming the elegant part of the city. Lunch at a fish restaurant in Sariyer is also included.

Day 4

Today’s guided tour of Istanbul starts with a visit to Topkapi Palace. Home of the Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years and the heart of the vast Ottoman Empire, Topkapi is today a museum of the old Turkish way of life. During our visit to Topkapi Palace, we see the Fruit Room of Ahmet II, adorned with fruit and floral paintings. We then visit the Underground Cistern which was built in the 6th century and supplied water throughout the city during the Byzantine and Ottoman times. Re-discovered in 1545, it was used to water the gardens of Topkapi Palace. Our guide then accompanies us to the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul. With 60 alleyways and 3,000 shops, it is the oldest and largest in the world.

Day 5

We enjoy a half day excursion to Dolmabahçe Palace, built by Sultan Abdül Mecit in 1856. The extravagant opulence of the palace belies the fact that it was built at a time when the Ottoman Empire was in decline. The rest of the day is at leisure in Istanbul, and you may choose to visit the Spice Bazaar.

Day 6

After spending the morning at leisure in Istanbul, we return to Istanbul Airport for our direct scheduled British Airways flight to Heathrow, and onwards coach travel back to our original pick up points.
