Suggested Itinerary

Day 1 – Munich

Scheduled flight to Munich from your preferred airport – transfer with our professional local guide and private executive coach to the centre of Munich for a guided walking tour – continue to the 4* Maritim Hotel in Munich – dinner in the hotel.

Day 2 – Residenz Munich & Cuvilliés Theatre

A guided tour of the Residenz Munich explores the architecture, decoration and works of art ranging from the Renaissance to the neoclassical era, taking in the Schatzkammer (the Treasury), a series of rooms holding the crown jewels of Bavaria, and the decorative vaulted ceiling of the Antiquarium – Cuvilliés Theatre was originally the exclusive reserve of members of court and many lavish opera productions were performed here, including the first performances of Mozart's ‘Idomeneo’ in 1781.

Day 3 – Linderhof Castle & Neuschwanstein Castle

Built between 1874 and 1878 and the smallest of King Ludwig II’s three royal castles, Linderhof was originally intended as a hunting lodge but later he declared it would be a new Versailles and the wonderful French Rococo interiors and beautiful parkland certainly reflect that ambition – Neuschwanstein Castle, the ‘castle of the fairy tale king’, was built by the shy King Ludwig II in order to withdraw from public life but seven weeks after his death in 1886 Neuschwanstein was opened to the public and today it is one of the most popular of all Europe’s castles.

Day 4 – Alte Pinakothek, Neue Pinakothek & the Lenbachhaus

Guided tour of the Alte Pinakothek introduces us to one of the most important collections of 14th to 18th century European paintings with more than 800 masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the end of the Rococo period – the Neue Pinakothek features outstanding works of European art and sculpture from the late 18th to the beginning of the 20th century, from Goya to the postimpressionists as well as works by great German artists such as Schinkel and Caspar David Friedrich – continue to the Lenbachhaus, reopened in 2013 after four years of restoration overseen by Lord Foster, and especially famous for its collection of paintings from the Blue Rider group of expressionist artists, including Kandinsky and Klee.

Day 5 – Oberammergau Passion Play

Travel 90km south to the village of Oberammergau – a tradition which first started in 1634, once again from 16th May to 4th October 2020, the Bavarian village performs its world famous Passion Play commemorating Christ’s journey into Jerusalem, His death and resurrection, a performance involving more than 2,000 villagers, a full orchestra and a vast stage – after time for lunch, take our seats for the Passion Play performance which runs from 2.30pm till 10.30pm until 16th August and from 1.30pm till 9.30pm from 18th August, in each case with a three hour interval for included dinner – after the Play, transfer back to the hotel.

Day 6 – Herz Jesu Church & Nymphenburg Palace

Visit the stunning ultra-modern Herz Jesu Church which is made of glass – the Baroque Nymphenburg Palace in Munich was the summer residence of the Bavarian monarchs and our visit takes in the ‘Gallery of Beauties’ commissioned by Ludwig I, the former bedroom of King Ludwig II and the impressive banquet hall with fine ceiling frescoes by Johann Baptist Zimmermann – transfer to Munich airport for our scheduled flight home.
