Itinerary

Day 1

We meet at our designated pick up points and transfer by coach to London Heathrow Airport for our direct scheduled British Airways flight to Bologna. On arrival in Itay we are met by our guide who will accompany us on all transfers and included excursions and continue by executive coach to the centrally located 4* Hotel Touring in Bologna for a five night stay. A welcome set three course dinner without drinks is included at a restaurant close to our hotel this evening, and the remaining four nights are on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2

This morning we enjoy a guided walking tour of the buildings and porticoed streets of Bologna, home to medieval palaces and the oldest university in Europe. We then enjoy a guided tour of one of Northern Italy’s finest galleries, the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna, housing works of the great Northern Italian artists including Giotto, Raphael and Perugino. The afternoon we visit the Anatomical Theatre. The room, named Theatre for its characteristic amphitheatre form, was designed in 1637 and constructed in spruce wood for the anatomy lessons by Bologna's artist Antonio Paolucci also known as Levanti, a pupil of Carracci.

Day 3

Our full day in Mantova begins with a guided tour of the Palazzo Ducale, once one of Europe’s largest palaces and now housing a wonderful art collection including the frescoes in the ‘Camera degli Sposi’ by Mantegna. The afternoon we visit the magnificent Palazzo Te and Giulio Romano’s ‘Room of Giants’.

Day 4

Our guided tour of Ravenna this morning is a wonderful introduction to the city that was once the capital of Rome’s Western Empire and one of the great seats of Byzantine art in Europe, and takes in the magnificent 6th century church of Sant’ Apollinare Nuovo and the mosaics of St Vitale and Mausoleo di Galla Placidia. En route back to Bologna this afternoon we visit the beautifully decorated Basilica of Sant’ Apollinare at Classe, dating back to the early 6th century.

Day 5

Today we travel to Padova, one of Italy’s oldest university towns and the setting for Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. On arrival we enjoy an introductory tour of Padova, including highlights such as the Caffe Pedrocchi, a famous meeting place for intellectuals and students since 1830’s. We continue to the Cappella degli Scrovegni for a guided tour. The chapel was decorated between the years of 1303 and 1305 by Giotto and the frescoes, which depict the life of Christ, became a powerful influence on the development of European Art.

Day 6

After checking out of our hotel this morning, we travel to Ferrara. Our guided tour on arrival introduces us to one of the region’s greatest walled towns and one of Italy’s hidden gems, with many attractive streets and medieval houses, a 12th century cathedral and the palaces of the d’Este dynasty. We then return to Bologna Airport for our direct scheduled British Airways flight to London Heathrow, and onwards coach travel back to our original pick up points.
