Itinerary

Day 1

We meet at London Stansted Airport for our direct scheduled Ryanair flight to Pisa. On arrival in Italy we are met by our local guide who will accompany us throughout our tour. We transfer in our private executive coach to Florence and check in at the centrally located 4* Hotel Berchielli for a five night stay. Dinner is served at a local restaurant near to our hotel this evening, with the remaining four nights on a bed and breakfast basis. A selection of restaurants are within walking distance of the hotel.

Day 2

Our local guide meets us at our hotel this morning and accompanies us throughout the day. We visit the beautiful Cappella Branacacci, containing frescoes on ‘The Life of St Peter’, commissioned by the Florentine merchant Felice Brancacci around 1424. This afternoon we visit the Uffizi Gallery, one of the world’s finest art galleries housing Renaissance art from the 14th to 18th century and originally established by the Medici family. We make our own way back to the hotel at leisure.

Day 3

This morning with our local guide we enjoy a visit to the Galleria dell’Accademia, founded in 1563 and the first school established in Europe specifically to teach the techniques of drawing, painting and sculpture. Home to a fine collection of art by an array of artists including Botticelli, Filippino Lippi and Fra Bartolomeo and, of course, Michelangelo’s ‘David’. We continue to the Museo di San Marco where we enjoy a guided tour. The museum occupies a vast area of the Dominican convent which played an important role in the cultural and religious life of Florence, especially at the time of Savonarola. The rest of the day is at leisure in Florence.

Day 4

This morning we travel to fascinating Siena and an included guided tour on arrival takes in the Campo, where the Palio horse race is run, the Cathedral, built between 1136 and 1382 and one of Italy’s greatest cathedrals, and the Piccolomini Library. We enjoy some time at leisure before returning to Florence.

Day 5

This morning we visit the Ospedale degli Innocenti, originally an orphanage. The hospital gallery is home to a collection of fifty works of art from the 14th to 18th centuries. We continue to the Bargello Gallery, Florence’s second ranking museum after the Uffizi. The Bargello building dates back to 1255 and now contains a wonderful medley of applied arts and Italy’s finest collection of Renaissance sculpture. Our final visit today is to the lovely Basilica di San Lorenzo, the parish church of the Medici family. We make our own way back to the hotel at leisure.

Day 6

After checking out of our hotel this morning, time permitting, we spend some time at leisure in wonderful Lucca before continuing by coach to Pisa Airport for our direct scheduled Ryanair flight back to London Stansted, from where we make our own way home.
