Itinerary

Day 1

We meet at our designated pick up points and transfer by coach to Gatwick Airport for our direct scheduled Easyjet flight to Bologna. On arrival in Bologna we are met by our tour manager who will accompany us throughout our tour. We transfer in our executive coach to the 4* Hotel Mamiani on the outskirts of Urbino for a five night stay. A set three course dinner without drinks is served in our hotel on the first and last evenings, and the remaining three nights are on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2

We spend the day in Urbino where its neo classical cathedral is set against a magnificent backdrop of medieval and Renaissance streets. During our guided tour we visit Casa Natale di Raffaello, home to Urbino’s famous son, the painter Raphael. Our guided tour of the Palazzo Ducale this afternoon introduces us to Italy’s most beautiful Renaissance palace which was built for Duke Federico da Montefeltro, the ruler of Urbino between 1444 and 1482.

Day 3

This morning we visit the beautifully decorated Basilica of Sant’ Apollinare at Classe, dating back to the early 6th century. Our guided tour of Ravenna is a wonderful introduction to the city that was once the capital of Rome’s Western Empire and one of the great seats of Byzantine art in Europe, and takes in the magnificent 6th century church of Sant’ Apollinare Nuovo and the mosaics of St Vitale and Mausoleo di Galla Placidia. The rest of the day is at leisure in Ravenna.

Day 4

This morning we enjoy a guided tour at Sansepolcro, the birthplace of Piero della Francesca. During our guided tour we visit the Museo Civico to see his masterpiece ‘The Resurrection’. The rest of the day is at leisure in Urbino.

Day 5

On arrival in the medieval town of Gubbio this morning we enjoy a guided tour of the 14th century Palazzo dei Consoli, considered by many to be one of the finest expressions of medieval city architecture in Italy. This afternoon we have a guided tour at the Palazzo Ducale and its art museum. The Palazzo Ducale was begun in 1476 by Federico da Montefeltro, duke of Urbino. Dinner is included in our hotel this evening.

Day 6

On arrival in Cesena, we visit the UNESCO listed Library of Malatestiana for a guided tour. The last ancient library dating from immediately before the invention of printing embodies the very concept of a humanist library. With its building, furnishings and manuscript collection, it constitutes a monumental and bibliographical complex of outstanding importance and is acknowledged the world over as the only 15th century library still intact. We return to Bologna Airport for our direct scheduled Easyjet flight to Gatwick, and onwards coach travel back to our original pick up points.
