We meet at our designated pick up points and travel by coach to London Gatwick Airport for our direct scheduled Easyjet flight to Bologna. On arrival in Italy we are met by our professional tour manager, who will accompany us throughout our tour. We travel by executive coach to the centrally located Hotel Touring in Bologna for a five night stay. A welcome dinner without drinks will be served at a restaurant near our hotel on the first evening, and the remaining four nights are on a bed and breakfast basis.
This morning we enjoy a guided tour of the buildings and porticoed streets of Bologna, home to medieval palaces and the oldest university in Europe. Our tour includes the Anatomical Theatre, built in 1637 by Antonio Levanti and constructed entirely in wood. This afternoon we visit the Pinacoteca Nazionale, housing works of the great Northern Italian artists including Giotto, Raphael and Preugino. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure in Bologna.
This morning our guided tour of Ravenna, the city that was once the capital of Rome’s Western Empire and one of the great seats of Byzantine art in Europe, takes in the magnificent 6th century church of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo and the mosaics of Basilica di St Vitale and Mausoleo di Galla Placidia. En route back to Bologna this afternoon we visit the beautifully decorated Basilica of Sant’Apollinare at Classe, dating back to the early 6th century.
Our full day in Mantova begins with a guided tour of the Palazzo Ducale, once one of Europe’s largest palaces and now housing a wonderful art collection including the frescoes in the ‘Camera degli Sposi’ by Mantegna. After time for lunch we visit the magnificent Palazzo Te and Giulio Romano’s ‘Room of Giants’.
This morning we enjoy a guided tour of Ferrara which introduces us to one of the region’s greatest walled towns and one of Italy’s hidden gems, with many attractive streets and medieval houses, a 12th century cathedral and the palaces of the d’Este dynasty. The rest of the day is at leisure, or you may choose to visit the 14th century Castello Estense, with its 15th century frescoes, dungeons and beautiful views from the Torre dei Leoni.
After checking out of our hotel this morning, we travel by coach to Bologna Airport for our direct scheduled Easyjet flight back to London Gatwick Airport, and onwards coach travel back to our original pick up points.
