NADFAS lecturer - Eveline Eaton

Originally from Berlin and now living in Surrey, Eveline Eaton is a freelance art historian and well known to many NADFAS members as an outstanding speaker. Her popular lectures and guided tours take her all over Britain, Continental Europe and beyond. She was educated at London University’s Courtauld Institute (BA Hons) and at the Study Centre for the History of Fine and Decorative Arts (Diploma).

Day 1 Munich guided tour

We take our direct scheduled flight from London Heathrow to Munich (regional flights available on request) where we are met by Eveline Eaton, the ever popular NADFAS lecturer, who will accompany us throughout our tour. After transfer by executive coach to the 3* superior Mercure Hotel München Altstadt for a four night stay on bed and breakfast basis, we enjoy an introductory guided walking tour of Munich with Eveline Eaton.

Day 2 Neue Pinakothek & Residenz Munich

This morning with Eveline we visit the Neue Pinakothek featuring outstanding works of European art and sculpture from the late 18th to the beginning of the 20th century including the comprehensive private collection of King Ludwig I. After free time for lunch, our visit with Eveline to the Residenz Munich, home to Bavarian dukes, electors and kings for almost five hundred years, explores the architecture, decoration and works of art ranging from the Renaissance, via early Baroque and Rococo to the neoclassical era taking in the Schatzkammer (the Treasury), a series of rooms holding the crown jewels of Bavaria and the decorative vaulted ceiling of the Antiquarium

Day 3 Neuschwanstein Castle, Wieskirche & Linderhof Castle

This morning with Eveline we travel into Bavaria and see from the exterior only Neuschwanstein Castle, the ‘castle of the fairy tale king’. Built between 1869 and 1886 as a retreat for Ludwig II and a homage to Wagner, the shy king intended to withdraw from public life but seven weeks after his death in 1886, Neuschwanstein was opened to the public and today it is one of the most popular of all Europe’s castles. We continue to the jewel of the Rococo churches, Wieskirche. An oval church designed in the late 1740s by Dominikus Zimmermann and regarded as his final masterpiece, it was added to the UNESCO list in 1983. After free time for lunch in the village of Oberammergau, famous for its Passion Play, we visit Linderhof Castle. Built between 1874 and 1878 and the smallest of King Ludwig II’s three royal castles, Linderhof was originally intended as a hunting lodge but later he declared it would be a new Versailles and the wonderful French Rococo interiors and beautiful parkland certainly reflect that ambition.

Day 4 Glyptothek Museum, Alte Pinakothek, Piankothek der Moderne & Brandhorst Collection

The Glyptothek Museum was founded by Louis I of Bavaria and designed by the architects Karl von Fischer and Leo von Klenze in 1815. This morning Eveline introduces us to its fine collection of Greek and Roman sculptures, complemented by a wonderful array of terracotta and bronze antiquities. The Alte Pinakothek is home to more than 800 masterpieces by European artists bringing to life the development of art from the Middle Ages to the end of the Rococo period. In the afternoon we visit the Pinakothek der Moderne, the largest collection of modern art in Germany, and the Brandhorst Collection, a new museum housing a superb collection of contemporary art from the second half of the twentieth century.

Day 5 Sacred Heart Church & Nymphenburg Palace

After checking out of the hotel, our first visit this morning is to the Sacred Heart Church, a beautiful modern church of glass, wood, concrete and wicker. The Baroque Nymphenburg Palace, the summer residence of the Bavarian monarchs, could not be more different. Our visit with Eveline takes in the ‘Gallery of Beauties’ commissioned by Ludwig I, the former bedroom of King Ludwig II and the impressive banquet hall with fine ceiling frescoes by Johann Baptist Zimmerman. We then transfer to Munich Airport for our flight back home.
