Day 1 – Grantham & Doddington Hall
Board our private executive coach at the designated pick up points – time at leisure for lunch in Grantham – continue to Doddington Hall, a family home that has never been sold since it was built in 1595 and whose mellow brick exterior with its walled courtyards has barely changed while the interior was redecorated in Georgian times in a light and elegant style – continue to the 3* Holiday Inn Hotel in Lincoln.
Day 2 – Lincoln, Medieval Bishops’ Palace & Tattershall Castle
Guided tour of Lincoln takes in sights such as the Castle and the Cathedral – continue to the Medieval Bishops’ Palace, set dramatically in the shadow of Lincoln Cathedral and with a superb contemporary Heritage Garden reflecting its historical setting – the National Trust’s Tattershall Castle is a vast fortified and moated tower built for Ralph Cromwell, Lord Treasurer of England from 1433 to 1443, and restored by Lord Curzon between 1911 and 1914.
Day 3 – Brodsworth Hall and Gardens & Gainsborough Old Hall
English Heritage’s Brodsworth Hall and Gardens has been preserved with the patina of wear, showing how a wealthy family and their servants really lived during 150 years of occupation – Gainsborough Old Hall, one of the best preserved medieval manor houses in England dating back to the late 15th century, has a kitchen with an enormous fireplace, a noble great hall and an imposing lodgings tower.
Day 4 – Newark on Trent, River Trent cruise, Workhouse at Southwell & Southwell Minster
Time at leisure in Newark on Trent, home to one of the finest Georgian market squares in England – included short cruise on the River Trent introducing us to the town and its picturesque surrounding countryside – the National Trust’s Workhouse at Southwell survives from hundreds that once covered the country and is the least altered today – Southwell Minster, with its majestic Norman nave and glorious 13th century chapter house, is one of the lesser known jewels in the crown of Nottinghamshire.
Day 5 – Woolsthorpe Manor
The National Trust’s Woolsthorpe Manor near Grantham is a modest 17th century Lincolnshire manor house and the birthplace and family home of Isaac Newton. All excursions & guided tours included
