SUGGESTED ITINERARY

Day 1 UK to Aix en Provence
Scheduled flight to Marseilles where we are met by our professional guide and transfer by private coach to the 3* Hotel Le Galice in Aix en Provence for our seven night stay on bed and breakfast basis. The evening is free to dine out in one of Aix many restaurants or the hotel restaurant.

Day 2 Aix en Provence
After a morning guided tour of the old town including the Bourg St-Sauveur and the City of Counts, we enjoy an afternoon at leisure to relax and explore this beautiful town, the home of Cezanne and Emile Zola.

Day 3 St Rémy de Provence & Les Baux de Provence
This morning we join our guide for the visit to St Rémy de Provence, where Van Gogh found inspiration in its light and landscape to produce some 150 paintings. In the afternoon we travel to the stunningly beautiful Les Baux de Provence to visit the panoramic Citadelle de la Ville Morte and the Musée de l’Olivier in the Romanesque Chapelle St-Blaise.

Day 4 Arles
We travel to the delightful town of Arles, home to the magnificent Roman cathedral of Sainte- Trophime and where Van Gogh spent time and is said to have eventually lost his sanity. On arrival we have a guided walking tour followed by free time to relax in this charming town.

Day 5 Avignon & Pont du Gard
Today we travel to Avignon. From 1305 to 1403 one of two claimants to the Papacy resided in Avignon and constructed the Palais des Papes. The architecture with its magnificent halls, rooms and inner courtyards make this visit a highlight. We then visit the famous Pont d'Avignon. Constructed between 1171 and 1185, it originally spun the River Rhône but today only four of the 22 arches remain intact. En route back to the hotel we stop to see the awesome Pont du Gard, the 50m Roman aqueduct which is now a World Heritage listed site.

Day 6 Château de la Barben & ‘In Cezanne’s footsteps’
We visit the 11th century Château de la Barben, containing furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries, followed by a tour of the village and the Church of Rognes. We then return to Aix en Provence for an afternoon tour ‘In Cezanne’s footsteps’ to discover the countryside that inspired the great painter including a visit to his studio.

Day 7 Châteaux de Lourmarin & d’Ansouis
Today we visit the Renaissance style Château de Lourmarin dating from the 15th century followed by free time for lunch in the village, one of the most beautiful in France. We then travel on to Cucuron Church and the lovely Château d’Ansouis and fortress gardens which have been owned by the same family since the 11th century.

Day 8 Aix en Provence
After a relaxing morning in Aix en Provence we transfer to Marseilles for our scheduled flight back to the UK.
