SUGGESTED ITINERARY
Day 1 UK to Aix en Provence
Scheduled flight to Marseilles where we are met
by our professional guide and transfer by private
coach to the 3* Hotel Le Galice in Aix en Provence
for our seven night stay on bed and breakfast
basis. The evening is free to dine out in one of
Aix many restaurants or the hotel restaurant.
Day 2 Aix en Provence
After a morning guided tour of the old town
including the Bourg St-Sauveur and the City of
Counts, we enjoy an afternoon at leisure to relax
and explore this beautiful town, the home of
Cezanne and Emile Zola.
Day 3 St Rémy de Provence & Les Baux de Provence
This morning we join our guide for the visit to St
Rémy de Provence, where Van Gogh found
inspiration in its light and landscape to produce
some 150 paintings. In the afternoon we travel to
the stunningly beautiful Les Baux de Provence to
visit the panoramic Citadelle de la Ville Morte and
the Musée de l’Olivier in the Romanesque
Chapelle St-Blaise.
Day 4 Arles
We travel to the delightful town of Arles, home to
the magnificent Roman cathedral of Sainte-
Trophime and where Van Gogh spent time and is
said to have eventually lost his sanity. On arrival
we have a guided walking tour followed by free
time to relax in this charming town.
Day 5 Avignon & Pont du Gard
Today we travel to Avignon. From 1305 to 1403
one of two claimants to the Papacy resided in
Avignon and constructed the Palais des Papes. The
architecture with its magnificent halls, rooms and
inner courtyards make this visit a highlight. We
then visit the famous Pont d'Avignon. Constructed
between 1171 and 1185, it originally spun the
River Rhône but today only four of the 22 arches
remain intact. En route back to the hotel we stop
to see the awesome Pont du Gard, the 50m Roman
aqueduct which is now a World Heritage listed site.
Day 6 Château de la Barben & ‘In Cezanne’s footsteps’
We visit the 11th century Château de la Barben,
containing furniture from the 17th and 18th
centuries, followed by a tour of the village and the
Church of Rognes. We then return to Aix en
Provence for an afternoon tour ‘In Cezanne’s
footsteps’ to discover the countryside that inspired
the great painter including a visit to his studio.
Day 7 Châteaux de Lourmarin & d’Ansouis
Today we visit the Renaissance style Château de
Lourmarin dating from the 15th century followed
by free time for lunch in the village, one of the
most beautiful in France. We then travel on to
Cucuron Church and the lovely Château d’Ansouis
and fortress gardens which have been owned by
the same family since the 11th century.
Day 8 Aix en Provence
After a relaxing morning in Aix en Provence we
transfer to Marseilles for our scheduled flight back
to the UK.
